Gerardo Bustillo Rodríguez (Sagua la Grande, Cuba, 1870 - Somió, Gijón, 1919)




Comenzó su afición a la fotografía hacia 1890. Era oficial de la Armada y en 1892 toma parte en el viaje de circunnavegación de la corbeta Nautilus, periplo del que lleva un diario personal que documenta con fotografías propias y ajenas. Será en la primera década del siglo XX cuando su trabajo fotográfico adquiere reconocimiento en el ámbito español, con varios premios en exposiciones nacionales y una presencia constante en las revistas especializadas, en las que defiende una fotografía plenamente artística en la línea de un pictorialismo de cuidado proceso técnico y de fidelidad a los cánones estéticos de este movimiento.



En Asturias, su labor es primordial para entender la valoración de la fotografía como arte, más allá de su función documental. Aglutinó a los aficionados y profesionales en el Foto Club Asturiano (1906), del que fue fundador y primer presidente , e impulsó en 1909 la Exposición de Fotografía celebrada en Gijón, primera muestra de carácter nacional celebrada en Asturias, que proyectó la obra de nuestros mejores fotógrafos. Personalidad abierta e inquieta, en su última etapa mostró interés por la cinematografía.
