María Pagés es reconocida internacionalmente por su personal concepto estético del arte flamenco. Entiende el arte como algo ilimitado y ha conquistado su lugar en la danza mundial. En 1990 crea su propia compañía, que por primera vez actuará en el Festival de Danza de Oviedo. Pagés propone una reflexión coreográfica que confronta el mito de aquel personaje que G. Bizet envolvió con su música en su ópera Carmen. Este es el punto de partida de un espectáculo que pretende desarmar estereotipos, mantenidos a lo largo de los siglos para silenciar la esencia de la mujer real. Una mujer hablando de las mujeres, con las mil y una aristas que las conforman.
La propuesta de Pagés busca despojar al público de la imagen prefabricada en nuestro universo cultural, para levantar sobre el escenario una más certera. Al tiempo, no sólo explora el deseo como una responsabilidad ética, reivindica la vida, el placer, la autonomía, la libertad y la felicidad como derechos de todo ser humano. Yo, Carmen es una de las últimas creaciones de Pagés, estrenada en el Teatro Calderón de Valladolid en 2014, mismo año del estreno internacional en Esplanada - Teatros en la Bahía de Singapur.
