Tchaikovsky punxo música a l'adaptación d'Alejandro Dumas (pa) del cuentu El cascanueces y el rei de los mures, de Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (puesta n'escena por Marius Petipa y encargáu pol director de los Teatros Imperiales Iván Vsevólozhski en 1891).
