Satsuki y Mei son dos niñas que se mudan con su padre a un nuevo hogar en el país, mientras su madre se recupera de una enfermedad en un hospital cercano. Para su sorpresa, pronto descubren que comparten esta casa con algunas criaturas bastante inusuales y con unos vecinos muy extraños, entre ellos Totoro, un espíritu del bosque. Cuando surgen los problemas, sus nuevos amigos las ayudarán a redescubrir la esperanza.
