Ermanno pasa los días entre tragaperras y pequeños hurtos. Lena llega a Italia desde Polonia para vender a la niña que lleva en su seno y poder empezar así una nueva vida. Ermanno tiene que fingir que es el padre de la niña para permitir a su tío y a su mujer, que no pueden tener hijos, obtener la custodia a través de una adopción entre parientes. A la espera de que la niña llegue al mundo, un vínculo inesperado crece entre los dos jóvenes.
