Schmid hace un sensible retrato de la historia de los habitantes de la “Casa di Riposa” de Milán, la más famosa residencia para cantantes retirados fundada en 1896 por Giuseppe Verdi. Entre los artistas de la película se encuentran Sara Scuderi, Giovanni Puligheddu, Leonida Bellon, Salvatore Locapo, Giuseppe Manacchini, Della Benning e Irma Colasanti, así como otros residentes. El cineasta suizo retrató a estos cantantes que reviven en el film historias del pasado y los papeles que los encumbraron.
