Un panfleto anónimo acusa a Jean Jacques Rousseau por haber abandonado a sus cinco hijos. Rousseau recurre a Voltaire para averiguar juntos quien es el autor de esta abominación. Esto nos da la oportunidad de asistir a una gran escena doméstica, donde los dos filósofos enfrentan sus ideas acerca de Dios, la igualdad, la educación y el teatro. Dos maneras igualmente generosas pero muy distintas de concebir la sociedad
