José María Merino (La Coruña, 1941) estudió Derecho en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Trabajó en los ministerios de Educación y de Cultura. Colaboró con UNESCO en proyectos para Hispanoamérica. Es patrono de la Fundación Alexander Pushkin y de la Fundación de la Lengua Española, y fue designado en 2005 Hans Christian Andersen Ambassador por el gobierno danés. Es, además, doctor honoris causa por la Universidad de León, Premio Castilla y León de las Letras y miembro de la Real Academia Española (sillón m).


Su vocación literaria se inició en la poesía, con la publicación de Sitio de Tarifa (1972). Su poesía ha sido reeditada en 2006 con el título Cumpleaños lejos de casa. Entre su larga lista de reconocimientos se cuentan, entre otros, el Premio Nacional de Literatura Juvenil (No soy un libro/ Los trenes del verano, 1993), el Premio Miguel Delibes de Narrativa (Las visiones de Lucrecia, 1996) y el Premio Nacional de Narrativa.
